Facility teams often ask whether environmental monitoring can simply run on the building management system (BMS). Sometimes integration helps; replacing independent monitoring with the BMS usually does not.

Why the systems have different jobs

A BMS controls the building: heating, ventilation, air handling and energy. It is designed to keep equipment running. An environmental monitoring system (EMS) independently measures whether critical conditions stayed within limits and produces validated evidence. When the same system controls and records, a single failure can affect both.

  • Sharing selected alarms or status signals with the BMS, so facility staff see critical events.
